Puketi Night Walk
Discover the dark secrets of Puketi Forest, the ancient kauri rainforest (15,000 hectares) close to the Bay of Islands. With over 360 indigenous species of plants, this subtropical rainforest is one of the most diverse in New Zealand. This intimate guided tour (max 6 people) takes you into the forest at twilight where you experience the transition from day to night. Listen to the bird song as the tuis, the fantails and the kukupa settle for the night, while the nocturnal moreporks and kiwi awaken. Feel the draft of the bats flying overhead and discover the creepy and crawly insects that are active at night.
Experienced guides with a passion for conservation share their stories and knowledge: learn more about the unique flora and fauna. Discover what’s threatening New Zealand’s subtropical rainforests: possums, stoats, ferrets and kauri dieback and what we can do to protect the eco system.

Beautiful night walk
This was a fantastic experience for the six of us. Ian, our guide has grown up playing in this forest, and he knew it so well. He drew our attention to forest life in a way that was different and interesting, showing us unusual flora and fauna. We greatly enjoyed staying at the B and B that Ian and Barbara run (over the road from the forest). The accommodation was very comfortable, and it was a great site from which to explore the area, including visiting the Ngawha thermal pools and doing the cycle trail from Kaikohe to Horeke.
