Puketi Night Walk – Tour Description

Discover the dark secrets of Puketi Forest, the ancient kauri rainforest (15,000 hectares) close to the Bay of Islands. With over 360 indigenous species of plants, this subtropical rainforest is one of the most diverse in New Zealand. This intimate guided tour (max 6 people) takes you into the forest at twilight where you experience the transition from day to night. Listen to the bird song as the tuis, the fantails and the kukupa settle for the night, while the nocturnal moreporks and kiwi awaken. Feel the draft of the bats flying overhead and discover the creepy and crawly insects that are active at night.

Experienced guides with a passion for conservation share their stories and knowledge: learn more about the unique flora and fauna. Discover what’s threatening New Zealand’s subtropical rainforests: possums, stoats, ferrets and kauri dieback and what we can do to protect the eco system.

Review by the New Zealand Herald

If you fancy dreaming of big fat wetas, then take a guided night walk with Adventure Puketi. We saw dozens of the infamous insects tucked up in sheltered spots on trees and rock walls in the Puketi Forest. The giant carnivorous snails (kauri snails) we encountered are also worthy of nightmares. I’ve never considered taking a guided bush tour. But having an experienced guide like Ian Candy makes a lot of sense. I never realised, until Candy got his big spotlight out, that we had such large spiders in the New Zealand bush.
