The Nature trail is an easy wander on a raised platform loop track at the beginning of the Puketi Forest recreation area, close to the Bay of Islands. With over 360 indigenous species of plants, this subtropical rainforest is one of the most diverse in New Zealand. The track leads to a beautiful kauri stand and provides a great experience for those wanting to learn more about New Zealand native flora and fauna.

Experienced guides with a passion for conservation share their stories and knowledge: learn more about the unique flora and fauna. Discover what’s threatening New Zealand’s subtropical rainforests: possums, stoats, ferrets and kauri dieback and what we can do to protect the eco system.

Review from Tripadvisor

We loved Puketi
We loved everything about our experience in the Puketi Forest. Ian’s passion for the trees, fauna and flora of his forest is contagious. The whole family enjoyed the walk, the deep knowledge imparted and the beauty of the majestic trees. The Kauri trees are simply impressive! Ian’s efforts to not only preserve the forest but to help it regain the vigour and natural variety of its origins is inspiring. It made me want to know more about this unique environment and to spend more time in nature.
